Meet Kurt

Kurt Meyer is the fifth generation of his family to live in rural Otranto Township in Mitchell County. He graduated from St. Ansgar High School and Luther College, where he majored in History and Political Science and graduated in 1976. After college, he worked in Cedar Rapids for Congressman Mike Blouin’s successful re-election campaign.

In 1978, Kurt married Paula Hermeier. Two years later, in 1980, Kurt and Paula served as Iowa Finance Co-Chairs of U.S. Senator John Culver’s re-election campaign. The Meyers moved to Philadelphia in 1981 where Kurt was a consultant to healthcare organizations and an administrator at the Wistar Institute, a biomedical research organization.

After returning to the Midwest in 1988, Kurt began his own company, assisting nonprofit organizations with strategic planning, community relations, board development, and fundraising. After 16 years, Kurt merged his company into Kairos and Associates, based in St. Paul, Minnesota. In the last two decades, Kurt has worked with a wide range of nonprofit organizations including colleges, hospitals, nursing homes, museums, human service agencies, libraries, and churches.

In 2004, with his Iowa friends and neighbors, Kurt became a founder of Advocates for a Cleaner Environment (ACE), a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and improving the community's environmental standards. Kurt currently serves as the organization's president.

Kurt made the decision to run for Congress in Iowa’s Fourth Congressional District in late 2007 and is pursuing this objective full-time in 2008. The Meyers have three children – Margaret (23), Eleanor (20), and Ethan (17) – all eager to be involved in Kurt’s campaign.
